Dealer Name: Acura Memphis
Name: Samuel Franklin |
We purchased a truck on July 5th, we traded in a vehicle and the big selling point was that we would only pay taxes on the trade in amount of $21,058.99 not the full purchase of $39,591.89. This car is registered in Michigan, which was disclosed, our previous car that was purchase Acura was also registered in Michigan. We received a check from Acura in the amount of $1263.54 to pay Michigan taxes of 6% to get our tags, when we went to pay our taxes we were told that we were $1100.00 short, Michigan does not recognized trade in value. I immediately contacted Acura. Everyone kept saying we are sure that's the way it is, because it works that way in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas. Well this was about Michigan. I had to get the Secretary of State phone number in Michigan to give to Acura to call because they did not seem too concerned. The finance manager David Barber was very nonchalant, he said they did nothing wrong and the contract states that if the taxes were more or less than we would be responsible for the difference. He indicated that there was no way they could know tax laws for all 50 states, he also said if my husband's home of residence was Michigan then he should have known that he had to pay taxes on the full purchase price. We also spoke the public relations manager and the General Manager. We are filing this claim because this was not a difference of $1000.00 it was the sales pitch that was the major emphasis put on the fact that we would pay taxes on the trade in difference. If the dealership did not know this to be true in the state of Michigan they should not told us that.
